Recently our area was under a storm watch with possible high winds, tornados and lots of driving rain. Regular programs on TV were not available, while the "storm team" continued to track the storm. They encouraged people to be aware of the possible necessity to take cover quickly.
Paul's parents live in a senior citizen community, where apartments are located off an inside hallway. Because of the nature of the storm and uncertainty of coming conditions, all the residents were asked to leave their apartments and meet in a central interior hallway.
Paul's father told us that in the midst of the storm, as they gathered together, he began to remember the words of a song.
"In the dark of the midnight have I oft hid my face,
While the storm howls above me, and there's no hiding place.
'Mid the crash of the thunder, Precious Lord, hear my cry,
Keep me safe till the storm passes by.
"Till the storm passes over, till the thunder sounds no more,
Till the clouds roll forever from the sky;
Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand,
Keep me safe till the storm passes by."*
Music is an encouragement in concert halls and in churches. But, what an encouragement it is when we are in the midst of a trying circumstance! The words that we have planted in our minds are just the words needed to remind us that God is with us when things are not going well.
While the storm rages, while the darkness surrounds us, while our earthly foundations are shaken, God's principles are not shaken. Hold on to your faith. Sing out in confidence. The Rock remains firm.
