If you've been reading these newsletters for a while, you know that I am a big PBR (Pro Bull Riding) fan. Nothing tops off a good Saturday like watching TV during the evening and seeing the guys ride their bulls. If the PBR events are close to our area, it is an especially great treat to attend.
During the 2009 PBR World Finals in Las Vegas, Round Six found five cowboys tied with the same top score for the round. Never before in the finals had a five-way tie occurred for the lead position.
What did they do? They split the prize for the round between the five men.
As Christians, we are told to press ("ride") toward the prize. (Philippians 3: 13, 14 says, "One thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.")
Although we want to win, we don't have to worry about splitting the prize with anyone. If we follow Christ and accept His gift of salvation, we can all win the prize. No one gets less because someone else reaches his goal and wins the prize.
Contrary to the PBR events, we are not competing against each other. As Christians, we are all on the same team. We are working with the same purpose.
Our reward is not a one-time prize to celebrate until the next round. Ours is an eternal prize. When we have fulfilled our work on this earth and we finally reach home in heaven, we have won. There will be no review of the action to see if we really made it. There will be no "oops," "sorry." As it says in the Philippians quote above, the victory is in Christ Jesus, who never changes and never fails. Our prize is sure. It is eternal. And, it is for every person who has met the requirement by accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Press on! We can all be winners.
