"Song For the Fourth"

Some years ago, songwriter Marty Funderburk wrote a song that seems especially timely this 4th of July holiday. With his co-writer, Joseph Habedank, Marty came up with a song called "Make America Great Again." (This was before that wording became a political catch-phrase.)  The song is a reminder about how life and society in America has radically changed over the years, as well as a prayer that Americans will remember what unites us as a people.

Recently, the song was recorded and sent to radio by Kelly Wright, who's known as an award-winning Fox News anchor but who is also an ordained minister, author, speaker and vocalist. His rendition of the song begins with a recitation from the preamble to the Declaration of Independence:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,
that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

I remember pledging our allegiance
and how the teachers all would lead us
as we bowed our heads to pray
And I remember when we believed our founding fathers
were courageous men of honor
and God blessed the USA
And I know this land has changed a lot since then
But it's not too late to make her great again

'Cause freedom never fails
And justice still prevails
And liberty remains the right of every man
If we could be united, a nation undivided,
under God and with His guidance
forever we would stand
What made America Great, can make America great again

And I remember when we stood against the tyrants
and spoke out in defiance
of those who would destroy
And I remember the sacrifice of many
who gave their lives defending
freedom on a foreign shore
And I know this land has changed a lot since then
But it's not too late to make her great again

America, America, God shed (has shed) His grace on thee.
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea

That's a prayer we certainly echo this Independence Day — and everyday. Only God's grace has brought us this far. And only His grace will preserve and protect our homeland for however many years we have left.
