"Still The Same"
Well, here we are moving into another new year. What kind of year was 2014 for you? (Or would you rather not think about it?) What kind of year will 2015 be? Lord only knows. Literally.
And that's why we as Christians can and should be optimistic always, but especially as we move into a new year. The Lord never changes; He is always in control. He knows what's best for you and for the world at large. And He knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10).
As I was putting together this coming weekend's broadcast, I found a new Jim Brady song recorded by the Booth Brothers called "Still" a song that shares an extremely appropriate reminder as we look ahead to the new year.
It opens with a verse about the fears and concerns so many people have about what they see going on in the world and in our country today. In fact, Jim told me, "As I've grown older, I've become more interested in the leadership and direction of our country. So lately, I've found myself being extremely concerned and, at times, anxious over the condition of this great land that I love.
"I'm sure there are others who are feeling the same way," Jim says. "So this song was written as a reminder for us all that the faithfulness of God hasn't changed, nor is He challenged by the condition of this world. It's comforting to know..."
Here's how Jim expressed that in his song...
Awaken to a dawn of uncertainty
Clouds of fear linger like the night
A day that feels so cold and dark and desperate
But I know where to find the Light
I picked up the timeless; the Truth that will remain
And read what will never change.1
That, of course, is the Bible God's Holy Word. We know that "the word of our Lord endures forever" (Isaiah 40:8). And nothing could be more reassuring to the Christian. Here's how Jim's song says it:
God is on His Throne; the Bible is His Word
The Gospel changes lives; And every prayer is heard
His plans could never fail; Not even one detail
His purpose will prevail.
He was...He is...He will...Still!2
Still He takes care of His children
And He inhabits their praise
Still He calls all men to trust Him
And still He'll come again someday3
God never changes. Why is that significant to you? Consider:
- The same One Who created the entire universe including you
Is the same One Who personally hears and interacts with you every time you pray.
- The same One Who came as a baby just over 2,000 years ago
Is the same One Who promised to be with us you and me always.
- The same One Who spoke to us through His written Word, the Bible
Is the same One Who speaks to us through Scripture today.
- The same One Who died on a cross to pay the penalty for our sins
Is the same One Who forgives our sins today.
- The same One Who lives in Christians' hearts today
Is the same One with Whom we will live throughout all eternity.
- The same One Who told us God IS LOVE
Is the same One Who loves you personally today.
- The same One Who knew YOU long before you were born
Is the same One who holds your future in His mighty hands.
If that doesn't encourage you as we move into a new year, nothing will. The Lord is constantly aware of what you're going through, "from the beginning of the year to the very end of the year" (Deut. 11:12).
Put your life in the Lord's hands, and watch what He'll do for you and through you in 2015.
