| From the program
aired the weekend of Oct. 24th & 25th, 2009: |
Our Featured Artists
on this program were the Tribute Quartet Gary Casto
(lead), Josh Singletary (baritone and pianist), Dennis Dugger
(bass) and Brian Alvey (tenor). This relatively new quartet has
a solid background. Gary, for example, has been in fulltime Southern Gospel
music for more than twenty years. As Gary says on the group's website
(www.tributequartet.com), "It
is this group's desire to offer Southern Gospel music at its finest to encourage
and inspire the audiences to whom we sing. It is the goal of Tribute Quartet
to carry on the grand tradition that is Southern Gospel music, and do it
in a way that respects those who have carried this gospel torch before us,
while at the same time producing our own fresh and unique sound."
Songs featured were from the Tribute Quartet's new "For This Time"
CD. You heard the Brian's story about the writing of their new radio
song, "That's Why I Love Him So." It's an excellent testimony song
for any Christian and is well done. The guys in the group are unanimous
in that this is their best recording yet, and that seems to be true.
The Tribute Quartet's CD featured on this program,
"For This Time," is available from our mailorder service, Springside.

For about thirty years
we've been visiting with Archie Watkins as the tenor for the
Inspirations. Now, of course, he is no longer with that group. (February
28 was his last concert with them.) But it was great to sit down and visit
with him about what he's doing now his new (and somewhat unexpected,
as he tells it) solo ministry. You heard three songs from his new
"Pouring Out Blessings" solo recording on the Artist Spotlight segment,
including two with very compelling background stories. Anyone with older
relatives that are experiencing various degrees of dementia will relate
immediately to the "He Will Remember Me" song. And I've already heard
from people who have been touched in a special way by Archie's other song,
"The Gospel According to John." What a wonderful background story
Archie told. More info about Archie can be found on his website,
www.archiewatkins.com.
It was great to run into Tim Riley recently. As you know, he's back
with Gold City for a while, filling in while they look for a new bass
singer. I think Gold City fans would say, "Take your time Tim's
doing great!"
As you heard on the
broadcast, I played a new song directly from an LP provided by Mercy's
Well. It's a limited-edition LP version of their new "Songbook"
recording, which, yes, is primarily being released as a CD, as always.
This was fun, and brought back memories of all those years we did our broadcast
playing records before there were such things as CDs. Our hat's off to Mercy's
Well for a wonderful promotional idea that ties in with the "campmeeting
style" music on that recording.
On
the Headline Update you heard about the recent inductees into the
Southern Gospel Music Association's Hall of Fame. Shelia and I really
enjoyed our visit there a few weeks ago for the event, and you heard a few
excerpts from the ceremonies. I would echo SGMA President Karen Peck Gooch's
urging that you help support the SGMA through a membership. It's only
$20 a year. More info can be found at
www.sgma.org.
