From the program aired the weekend of Oct. 3rd & 4th, 2009:

As you know, this was an unusual broadcast in that we had a special Featured Artist on the first hour (with whom we visited throughout most of the hour) and then we had the Singing News Fan Awards on the second hour.

Wayne Haun Wayne Haun, our Featured Artist on the first hour (primarily as a songwriter) is one of the most gifted young men today in Southern Gospel music. His love for music goes back to childhood (as you heard) and he is classically-trained, so his thoughts about the state of music today are unusually well informed. It's great to have such a talent in Southern Gospel music, writing great songs, arranging great music and producing great recordings for a long list of top artists. If you read the credits on CD liners, especially with the top groups, you'll see Wayne's name often as a song co-writer and, often, as producer of the album.

As you know, Wayne has been traveling as the keyboardist for Ernie Haase & Signature Sound for the past two years — something he never expected to enjoy doing nearly so much as he does. Now, in fact, he says he "loves road life." Here's how it happened: "When Ernie called me, actually about five years ago, he...said let's go to dinner. I just happened to be available, so we went and sat down. And he was talking about the road life and how he thought I might fit in. And I absolutely said no, I was not a roadie, and there was no way I was going to get on a bus and sleep on a bunk and wake up in a new city every morning. And he stayed on me for a couple of years... [Then] they had been without a piano player for several months and Gordon Mote was filling in. But [Gordon] had his own schedule... So he just said come out for a couple of weeks and teach us some new songs. We had just written 'Reason Enough,' and he said, teach us 'Reason Enough' on stage. That will be your excuse to go out. And that was two years ago, and I've not gotten off the bus since."

The second hour of this program featured some of the sounds and excitement from this year's Singing News Fan Awards, presented September 19th at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. These are still Southern Gospel music's most prestigious fan-voted awards, since the Singing News has the broadest subscription base of any Southern Gospel music publication. How about those Booth Brothers! They were associated with an amazing eight awards, including individual, group, song and album awards. Nobody else even came close. God has certainly blessed the Booth Brothers, and their acceptance comments (a few of which you heard on the broadcast) show why — they gave God all the credit and glory.

Congratulations to the Southern Gospel Promoters Association "Promoter of the Year" — Twila Rohrer. We're a little partial here since she's our hometown concert promoter through Garden Spot Promotions. Good choice, SGPA! Also, congratulations to Jerry Kirksey of Singing News magazine for his receipt of the Norcross-Templeton Award. Jerry's been the only editor-in-chief the Singing News has ever had, so, clearly, his hand has been in everything that has guided this publication to become the foremost magazine in the field that it is today. And, in that capacity, he has exerted a positive and enormous influence on the entire field of Southern Gospel music.
