| From the program
aired the weekend of Sept. 19th & 20th, 2009: |
Our Featured Artists on this program were
Karen Peck & New River Karen Peck Gooch, her sister,
Susan Jackson, and Devin McGlamery. As you heard on the program,
we've been featuring this group on The Gospel Greats since the group
was first organized in 1991. And long before that we were interviewing Karen
when she was a member of the Nelons. She said on the air that she's
been singing for 29 years! Songs featured on this program were from their
new "No Worries" CD. I appreciated the theme than runs through many
of the songs about the faithfulness of God and why we don't need to worry
because, no matter what happens, God is in control. I like the song "The
Hour I First Believed," which includes these lyrics: "When yesterday
is years ago and You have loved me faithfully, Oh, You've never left or failed
me from the Hour I first believed."

I enjoyed our visit with Gerald Sweatman on
the Songwriter Spotlight segment. Gerald, who says he and his wife
listen to The Gospel Greats program back home every Sunday morning,
had sung with the Liberty Quartet during the 1980s. He planned to go solo,
but then his son, Dustin, came along and so they started a family
group. Dustin now sings with the Mark Trammell Trio, so Gerald is
solo again. As you heard, his first big hit as a songwriter was back in 1977
when the Kingsmen recorded a song of his called "Just A Little
Closer Home." I dug out the original LP of that one to include on the
broadcast. E-mail:

On the Headline Update we had a special remembrance of
the late Bill Hefner, a founding member of the Harvesters Quartet
way back in 1953 in Charlotte, NC. Although he was elected to Congress,
beginning his term in 1975 and serving for 24 years, he never lost his love
for Southern Gospel quartet singing. As you heard on the broadcast, he sang
as recently as last month at the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion, hosted by Charlie
Waller. I had a chance to interview him only once, back in 1978, when he
made a special appearance in Harrisburg, PA, with the Harvesters. I didn't
have the chance to mention it on the air, but Bill Hefner was the brother
of Jim Hefner, who heads the Southern Gospel Promoters'
Association. Condolences and notes of encouragement may be sent to the
Hefner Family, PO Box 2594, Albertville AL 35950.
