| From the program
aired the weekend of Sept. 12th & 13th, 2009: |
This was our annual All-Quartets
Edition, in honor of the start of Southern Gospel music's biggest annual
event, the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, KY. Quartet
singing has formed the foundation of Southern Gospel music ever since, as
Gary Casto mentioned on the program, the Vaughan quartets traveled
the country singing (and selling their songbooks) nearly a century ago. And,
although mixed groups, trios and even soloists now form a large part of the
genre, quartets still provide the music's foundation. I hope you enjoyed
(as I did) the two special features on the second hour the recreation
by Ernie Haase & Signature Sound of a 1940s quartet radio program
as well as the special "Yesterday's Voices" feature remembering
the late Hovie Lister, the consummate quartet man. (This concludes
this season's run of "Yesterday's Voices" features. They'll return next summer.)
Our Featured Artists on this program were the
Dove Brothers (a quartet, of course). We visited with McCray Dove,
Eric Dove, Jerry Martin and David Hester. (We'll visit with pianist
Jerry Kelso separately on an upcoming broadcast.) The six songs you
heard during our Featured Artist visits were from their new CD, "Hold
On." I'm glad McCray added the opening and closing lines to their current
radio song, "A Little Good News," because, as the song now says, "the
Gospel is the good news needed today." Very true, and more urgently than
ever. McCray's story about where he wrote his song "Jesus He's Everything"
was amusing. (Fortunately, we have no photos of the writing session.)
I really enjoyed their song "When I Wake Up In The Morning." I hope
it'll be a future radio release for them.
The Dove Brothers' CD featured on this program, "Hold
On," is available from our mailorder service, Springside. You can order
