From the program aired the weekend of July 18th & 19th, 2009:

Click for Jerry Bennett - Hemphill Tribute Our Featured Artists on this program were soloist Jerry Bennett along with Joel and Labreeska Hemphill. As you heard Jerry say on the air, the Hemphills were one of his early influences in Gospel music. So he wanted to develop a special CD that would pay tribute to the Hemphills, one of the most popular Southern Gospel groups back in, especially, the 1980s when they had so many top hits. The album is unique in that it includes 17 songs, most of which were written by Joel, but all of which were songs for which the Hemphills were known. Jerry sings on many of them, but so do Joel and Labreeska. These are new tracks and new vocals. The album is called "Diggin'" because, as Jerry noted, he went digging all the way back to some of the very first Hemphills recordings to find songs for this CD. Another unique thing about this CD, which I didn't talk a lot about on the air, is that it includes several verbal comments by the Hemphills and others in Southern Gospel music about the Hemphills and their music. In fact, I was honored to submit comments which were placed at the start of the CD. We've known the Hemphills for almost thirty years and I applaud Jerry Bennett for putting this new CD together.

Called Out Quartet Our Artist Spotlight guests were the Called Out Quartet from Hendersonville, Tennessee. This group today consists of Jess Birdwell (lead), Scott Russell (tenor) and Von Gaines (bass). Currently filling in at the baritone position (which they search for a permanent baritone) are former members Darrell Collier and Marty Harris. By they way, Scott recently announced he and his girlfriend, Ashley, are engaged. He surprised her with a ring during a romantic moment as they were together on Cape Cod, alone, um, with a photographer, apparently, because photos are on Scott's blog. I mentioned on the program that Called Out Quartet has their first-ever Homecoming scheduled Saturday, August 8th, at McFerrin Missionary Baptist Church in Madison, TN. Their website is www.calledoutquartet.com and their e-mail is calledout@calledoutquartet.com. Phone - 615-332-5500.

On the Headline Update I mentioned the 11th Annual St. Jude Benefit Concert scheduled August 1st at the Georgia Mountains Center, Main Street, in Gainesville, Georgia. It's at 6 p.m. and features Mike and Kelly Bowling, Priority (formerly known as the Mike LeFevre Quartet), the Perry Sisters, the Old Paths, the Diplomats and Gerald Sweatman. Info is available by calling 770-532-3016, 770-540-9085 or 888-741-9306. Concert proceeds benefit the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
