| From the broadcast
the weekend of June 21st & 22nd, 2008: |
This
was one of my favorite "regular" programs in quite a while. For someone who's
been involved in radio all of his adult life (as I have) and for someone
who loves good Southern Gospel music (as I do), talking about old-time
Southern Gospel radio is doubly interesting. After all, that's our "roots."
For years I've been suggesting to various quartets that they do an old-time
radio show segment as part of their concert presentations, and now Ernie
Haase & Signature Sound have, in a sense, actually done it. Their
new "Influenced" CD is patterned on what you might hear if you got
up early one morning back in the 1940s or 1950s and tuned in one of those
quarter-hour live quartet broadcasts that were so popular. Now, many of the
songs on this CD are simply as you'd find on any recording. Others have
commentary before or after. That's why on our first three Featured Artist
visits on this broadcast you heard songs presented in the usual way. But
then I edited together pieces from the CD that included artist commentary,
along with the opening and closing themes (which were normally part of those
old-time broadcasts). The result was just about as close at you could come
to the style of those old-time broadcasts.
Unlike their regular recordings, this "Influenced" CD from Ernie
Haase & Signature Sound is available for purchase only at their summer
concerts. You can find out where these are by checking their website,
www.erniehaase.com.
Speaking
of old-time radio, I found that short excerpt from an original Blackwood
Brothers broadcast quite interesting. We know it was from before 1954
because two of the group's members who are on that recording were tragically
killed that year in an airplane crash, R. W. Blackwood and Bill
Lyles.
You heard what I called a "Yesterday's Voices" feature on this program,
with comments from the late George Younce. I hope to do more of these,
especially through the summer, as we hear once again the voices of some of
Southern Gospel music's best-known singers of yesteryear. (Ernie
Haase tells me he'd like to hear such a feature every week!)
Our Artist
Spotlight visit was with the Soul'd Out Quartet. Yes, the name is
unusual and you have to see it in print, perhaps, before realizing how it's
spelled. But you will remember it. And you'll remember this quartet, too.
The group today includes Matt Fouch (bass), Matt Rankin (lead),
Tanner Stahl (baritone) and Dusty Barrett (tenor). Songs included
on this feature were from their current "Saved" CD. But they'll be
releasing a new one shortly. More information about this emerging young quartet
can be found at their website,
www.souldoutquartet.com.
Congratulations
to the winner of a week at the 2008 National Quartet Convention.
He's Lester Sawyer of Caledonia, Illinois. He hears The Gospel
Greats program on WGSL. Mr. Sawyer wins tickets for two to all
afternoon showcases and evening concerts at the NQC, hotel accomodations
for the week and other prizes. Thanks to the NQC for making this great
prize available. More info about the NQC is available at their
website,
www.natqc.com.
A special "thanks" and
"congratulations" to WGRV Radio in Greeneville, Tennessee. This month
marks their 20th anniversary of carrying The Gospel Greats
program. We certainly appreciate the opportunity, for so many years, to be
a part of the WGRV family of programs.
On the Headline Update we talked about the Steve Hurst School Of
Music. Here's their website for more information:
www.stevehurstschoolofmusic.com.
This year's school in Nashville is July 6-11. The website has information
about the other regional schools through the year.
NOTE: The
entry deadline for the Ernie Haase and Signature Sound CD "Influenced" has
passed. Thanks to all who entered.
