the weekend of May 3rd & 4th, 2008: |
Our Featured
Artist on this program was, as a songwriter, Ronny Hinson. Ronny's
always been an exceptional songwriter, ever since writing "The Lighthouse"
way back when (the story of which he told on this broadcast). But it's
great to see that, after some years of writing very little, that once again
he's writing a LOT perhaps more than ever. And his songs are being
picked up by a lot of today's top groups, several of which you heard on this
broadcast. Interestingly, he writes songs to fit just about any kind of artists
quartets, soloists, mixed groups (such as the Hoppers, for which he
wrote their recent number one song, "I'm Just Waiting For My Ride," on
which Ronny made a guest appearance) and anyone else who's interested.
I love what Ronny said on the program about Gospel music: "I believe that
the church, we as Christians, each one of us are called to be evangelists
and to take a message to the world. And I believe that music...from my heart
to the person's heart that's hurting, from that group's heart that's singing
my songs, to the person they're singing to that's saying, 'Man, I don't know
if I can go on anymore,' I think that message music, that's what sums up
Southern Gospel. And that music is the music that moves God's heart, because
that fulfills the call of the church. And we're evangelists, whether we preach
it in word or sing it in song, [we] must always deliver that message to the
heart of that one that's hurting. They're counting on us. And we can't, through
our own desires to be popular and our own desires to be a superstar, we can't
diminish that and forget that that it's about that message... I think
that in some cases Gospel has gotten away from that. But I see it coming
back around. I see the hearts of people hungry for message again. And that's
why I think I'm poised, because I'm a message man. I love the message."
Ronny hasn't put out a solo recording in some years and, so far as we can
determine, doesn't have a website. But a recent collection of historic recordings
by the Hinsons is available through our Springside webstore.

Our Artist Spotlight guests were the Skyline Boys with songs from
their current CD entitled "How I Picture Me." As you heard Dennis
Powers explain on the broadcast, this group, as such, as been singing
since 1995. But their singing roots go back to a group that was formed in
the 70s. Today's group includes Dennis Powers (bass), Bob Nitz
(baritone), Rob Nykamp (lead) and Jodi Hosterman (tenor).
Their current hit is "You've Never Been Alone," featuring Jodi, who
formerly sang with the Kingdom Heirs. As Jodi said, "This message of hope
and encouragement is very relevant for today."
The Skyline Boys, "How I Picture Me," is available through
our webstore. Just call 1-800-38-MUSIC to order. Or you can order easily

On
the Headline Update I reported about the Southern Gospel Music
Guild's recent 2008 Harmony Honors celebration in Nashville April
22nd. I was once again honored to be the "backstage announcer" for this event,
held at the Nashville Hilton's ballroom during GMA Week. Thanks to everyone
who attended and everyone who was a part of this gala evening. This year's
"Honors" weren't voted in the same way as in the past, but rather the honorees
were selected by the Guild for their demonstrable achievements in the field
during the past year. I liked what producer Lari Goss (photo, above
right) had to say about Southern Gospel songs during his acceptance speech:
"They're such wonderful messages about the blood, the cross, the Holy
Spirit, redemption, salvation, resurrection...and to me that's what it's
all about. Amen?" Amen!
